Spring is finally here, and I couldn’t be happier! It’s one of my favorite times of the year when my plants begin to peek their heads out, and the birds and bees start to target me when I walk into my backyard. It’s all fun and games until they start chasing me, lol!

I love it when nature starts to wake up. That being said, I figured this is the perfect time of the year to explore this month’s Passion Project

The Crochet Sunflower

Ironically, I didn’t plant any sunflowers this spring, but our garden is thriving with all kinds of other goodies: lavender, rosemary, bell peppers, sugar snap peas, pumpkins, and even blueberries. Yum!

Gardening has always been a passion of mine, but this season is extra special because my husbae and I are doing it together. 🥰 There’s something incredibly rewarding about stepping into your own space to harvest fresh produce. I absolutely love it!

Now, back to business! If you haven’t visited my YouTube channel yet, be sure to stop by. There is a new pattern and tutorial uploaded every week.

Here is the latest video. Don't forget to like and subscribe!

There is also a step-by-step tutorial for this month’s Passion Project — the Crochet Sunflower!

Below is the free version of the pattern to get you started, I will also have a formatted and printable version available in my Etsy shop soon, to go along with the tutorial to help you out. I tried to create multiple ways for you to access, get support, and succeed in this pattern!

Let’s get started!

Materials:

- 3.5 mm hook

- Stitch marker

- Yarn needle

- Scissors

- Worsted weight yarn (1 color for middle, leaf, and pedals each)

- Dowel (whatever size you want your stem to be)

- Polyfil

- Glue

Abbreviations:

- mc= magic circle

- inc= increase

- ch= chain

- sl st= slip stitch

- sc= single crochet

- dc= double crochet

- tc= triple crochet

- **= repeat the pattern within the asterisk to the end of the row

- []= crochet the pattern within the brackets in the same stitch

Pattern:

Flower

Center (make 2)

Start with brown yarn

Row 1: mc, 6sc

Row 2: *inc*

Row 3: *1sc, inc*

Row 4: *2sc, inc*

Row 5: *3sc, inc*

Row 6: *4sc, inc*

Row 7: *5sc, inc*

Place sides together, wrong sides together

Side note: this pattern technically can be used to make two different kinds of sunflowers. This is option #1.

Row 8: 1sc in each stitch

(leave 4 stitches open at the end of the row)

Pedals

Switch to yelllow yarn

Row 9: *[sc, dc, tc, ch1], [tc, dc, sc], sl st*

Row 10: *sl st, sc, dc, [2tc, ch3, 2sc into the ch, 2tc], dc, sc, sl st,* FO

...and this is option #2 for the sunflower 🤓. Addition row 10 makes the flower largers and createds the points on the tips of the pedals.

Leaf

Row 1: ch10

Row 2: sc, 2dc, 3tc, 2dc [2sc, ch2, 2sc], 2dc, 3tc, 2dc, [2sc, ch2, sc], sl st

Wrap the green yarn around the dowl from top to bottom

Assembly

Check out my Youtube Video for the assembly process
